Derwent Water

Derwent Water is one of the Lake District's most popular beauty spots due to its location next to the tourist town of Keswick and its ease of access by the A66. It lies just below Keswick in the centre of the Lake District with various walks existing around the area that offer stunning views of the lake and surrounding fells.

Another cause of its popularity is that open non motorised boating is allowed on the Lake, unlike at lakes such as Bassenthwaite. A variety of companies offer both rowing and motorbike hire around the lake, including some who offer kayaks and canoes. Despite motorised boating being authorised on the lake and steamboat rides regularly shipping passengers from one side to the other, it remains a peaceful lake that contends as one of the most interacting within the Lake District.

Catbells rises beside Derwent water, and exists as one of the Lake Districts most walked fells. The starting point in many new fell walkers’ new hobbies, it offers a child friendly climb that results in spectacular views over the lake and surrounding areas. For those unable to make such a climb, Derwent’s beauty can still be enjoyed, through short walks from Keswick to viewing points beside the lake.

Nearby Keswick offers a variety of places to stay, eat, drink, relax and shop with it being heavily geared towards tourist needs during the summer months. Numerous shops offer an ample supply of products for outdoor activities, from walking boots to kayaking and climbing gear.
