The Lake district is a region of lakes and mountains (or fells) found in North West of England. The area has 13 main lakes, innumerable mountain tarns and streams, and a range of mountains rising to heights of around 3,000 feet

The Lake District has an area of around 200 square kilometres and a population of around 300,000 people. Lowlands occupy the northern, southern and eastern borders of the county, with farming an important feature, in particular sheep rearing and dairy farming.

The Lake District became famous after a group of British poets made it their home at the beginning of the 19th century. The most famous of these poets are William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey. Wordsworth lived his early years in Cockermouth where "Wordsworth house" national trust property is open to visitors in the summer season. These poets were described by critics as the Lake School of poetry and from then on they were referred to as the Lake Poets.

The county Cumbria was formed in 1974 when the former counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire were merged together. The Lake District National Park is almost entirely contained within the county of Cumbria. The city of Carlisle is the administrative and commercial centre of Cumbria and it is situated on the Eden River.
